​Lately, homeowners in and around Greeley have been reaching out after finding spiders and earwigs upstairs. ​So, What Changed in Greeley and Denver?

The short answer: both areas experienced hot weather followed by several quick temperature swings.

From September 3 through 5, the Greeley 4 weather station recorded highs between 90°F and 95°F. By September 10, overnight temperatures had fallen into the upper 40s. After another warmup, the daytime high dropped to about 72°F on September 15.

The Denver Metro area followed a similar pattern. Denver, Broomfield, and Centennial reached the low 90s early in the month before cooler nights arrived. By September 15, daytime highs had fallen into the upper 60s and low 70s.

Rain was a different story. The Greeley 4 station logged about one-third of an inch on September 6, and Centennial received about three-quarters of an inch over September 5 and 6. Central Denver and Denver International Airport stayed nearly dry.

Weather alone cannot explain pest activity in a particular home. However, changing temperatures and too much or too little rain can affect earwigs and other insects, which may also influence where spiders show up.

Why Are Earwigs Active Right Now?

Earwigs are active throughout Colorado’s warmer months, and homeowners may continue seeing them into early fall. These nocturnal insects spend the day inside dark, narrow spaces, especially where moisture is available.

An earwig found inside usually wandered in from outdoors. It does not automatically mean there is a reproducing infestation somewhere in the house.

Why Are Spiders Appearing at the Same Time?

Late summer and early fall are also prime seasons for spider activity in Colorado. Some mature spiders wander while searching for mates, while others move into protected areas as outdoor temperatures cool. Spiders also go where their food is.

If insects are gathering around exterior lights, windows, eaves, or attic openings, spiders may establish webs nearby or follow that insect activity indoors. Colorado State University notes that funnel weavers are particularly common around homes in late summer and early fall.

Seeing spiders and earwigs at the same time may simply mean both are responding to the same conditions and using similar openings to get inside.

How Do These Pests Reach the Second Floor?

Finding spiders and earwigs upstairs does not mean they traveled through every level of the house. Upper stories have their own entry points, along with exterior conditions that can help pests reach them, including:

  • Gaps around windows and screens
  • Openings where siding meets trim
  • Soffit and attic vents
  • Bathroom and laundry exhaust vents
  • Gaps along the roofline
  • Branches touching the roof or siding
  • Damp gutters or accumulated roof debris

Exterior lighting near second-floor windows can also attract flying insects, creating a convenient feeding area for spiders. Inside, upstairs bathrooms, laundry rooms, houseplants, plumbing leaks, and poorly ventilated spaces may provide the moisture or shelter earwigs seek.

If the activity keeps occurring in the same upstairs room, it makes sense to inspect that part of the home rather than concentrating only on the foundation.

What Can Homeowners Do?

A few practical steps can reduce the conditions that attract these pests and make it harder for them to get inside:

  • Repair damaged screens and seal gaps around upstairs windows.
  • Inspect soffits, attic vents, exhaust vents, and roofline transitions.
  • Clear leaves and debris from gutters.
  • Trim branches that touch the roof or siding.
  • Address plumbing leaks, condensation, and poor bathroom ventilation.
  • Reduce unnecessary exterior lighting near windows.

These steps can help, but they are only part of the picture. Spiders, earwigs, and other pests remain active at different times throughout the year, which is why ongoing prevention matters.
