How To Get Rid Of Those Tiny Red Bugs This Fall

Although clover mites are active in the spring, they also show up in and around Colorado homes in the fall. If you’re seeing tiny red bugs crawling outdoors, on the sides of your home, or even inside, you’re probably wondering what steps to take to get rid of clover mites. In today’s blog post, we will be taking a closer look at these nuisance pests, explain why they’re showing up now, and offer practical solutions to help you keep these tiny red bugs out of your home.

What are clover mites?

Clover mites, as their name suggests, are a type of true mite, not an insect, and are closely related to ticks and spiders. Clover mites are about the size of a pin head and are generally red although they can also be a shade of green. They have eight legs with the first pair being much longer than the rest, and they have featherlike plates sporadically placed across their abdomen. Of course, this may be hard to see without the aid of a magnifying glass or other magnification tool. Clover mites are a type of plant feeder, and can typically be found feeding on clover, grass, plants, and weeds.

Clover mites are a common fall pest problem in Denver, Colorado Springs & throughout Colorado

Clover mites are mostly found living outside, but can become a problem inside homes in the spring and fall. When the weather cools, they will gather by the thousands on the sunny sides of homes and other buildings, finding their way inside through small cracks, crevices, and gaps found in exterior walls and around windows. Once inside, they aren’t likely to make a move until spring arrives and they emerge from their overwintering hiding spots.

The good news is that clover mites are not a serious pest threat

Unlike mice and cockroaches that are a threat to health, clover mites will not jeopardize anyone’s health. And even though they will not cause significant damage to property, there is a chance they’ll leave behind red stains on walls, carpets, and furniture when they are inevitably crushed.

Even though they’re relatively harmless, they’re still a pest

While it’s true these tiny mites do not pose a significant threat, it’s worth mentioning that they might also attract other pests, such as spiders, that feed on them. In other words, you still don’t want these tiny little pests around.

To keep clover mites out of your home this fall and to prevent them from spending the winter in your home, there are a few things you can do including, but not limited to:

  • Find and seal any cracks or holes
  • Caulk spaces found around exterior windows and doors
  • Create a stone or gravel barrier between the lawn and the house foundation
  • Trim back tree limbs, bushes, and shrubs that grow against your home
