What do wood rats look like?

Here in Colorado, we run into wood rats more than other types of rats. Also called pack rats, these rodents are very similar to other rats but have a furry tail. They have large ears, big black eyes, and are a grayish-brown color.

Wood rats build complex nests out of objects that they collect like sticks, plants, shiny objects and other treasures that they come across. Their nests often have several different “rooms” in them and tend to be built in rocky crevices.

Are wood rats dangerous?

Yes, wood rats are considered to be dangerous. They carry a variety of diseases that can be transmitted to people. Inside homes they are very destructive and will chew through wires, insulation, drywall, and pipes.

Why do I have a wood rat problem?

While wood rats generally create their nesting areas outside, if given the opportunity they will move inside of homes and make nests in attics and behind wall voids. Once in, they’ll also forage for food.

How can I prevent a wood rat problem in the future?

The best way to prevent a wood rat problem in your home (or business) is to make sure that they cannot get inside.

Guard your chimney with a tight fitting cap, cover any vents and fix any holes along your roof line. Make sure that any other holes on the exterior are sealed and that gaps around windows and doors are fixed.

Also concentrate on eliminating potential food sources inside and out. This includes trash cans with poorly fitting lids, pet food outside, and bird feeders. At the first sign of a rat problem, contact us for a customized solution.
