Ants

Ants are a very social insects. They live and work together in very large colonies. Ants divide themselves into different castes within the colony; workers, soldiers and reproductives. Ants will become problematic in homes when they build nests inside, or make their way inside to forage for food and water. Once they get into your home they can be very difficult to eliminate.

Three of the most common types of ants found in the area include:

Pavement ants- They are a small ant, brown to black in color. Pavement ants build the entrance to their nesting areas between the spaces in pavement, sidewalks and in gaps between landscape pavers and bricks. They will enter into homes in very large numbers searching for food.

Carpenter ants- They are a large species of ant that are black in color. They do not eat the wood, they invade the wood to create tunnels to make their nesting and hibernation areas in. They are particularly drawn to wood that is unstained, unpainted or that has had previous water damage. Carpenter ants left untreated can cause significant damage to the structures of homes and other buildings.

Sugar ants- Sugar ants have a distinctive black head and brownish-orange body. As their name suggests they are drawn to sugary foods, but are omnivores and will feed just as easily on savory items.

Are ants dangerous?

Yes, some types of ants can be considered to be dangerous while others are nuisance pests. There are some species that bite and sting (which can cause problems for some people) and others like the carpenter ant can rend extensive damage to the structure of homes and other structures.
