Hey Colorado, Here's How To Stop The Mosquito Bites!

The first step toward stopping mosquito bites is to develop a better understanding of the nature and habits of the mosquito. We wait all winter and endure cool springtime just to enter into those warm summer months with fun outdoor activities. However, the incessant buzzing and biting mosquitoes can put a real damper on an otherwise enjoyable evening outdoors.

The best way to stop mosquito bites is to reduce the amount of mosquitoes on your property. The life stages of a mosquito are the egg, larva, pupa and adult. The first three stages all require standing water for survival and development. The adult will either deposit her eggs in low areas that will, at some point, flood and cover the eggs with water, or she will deposit eggs directly on standing water. The egg can lay dormant for long periods of time until it becomes covered with standing water. The water will activate the hatching process and within days, larvae will hatch. These wigglers also must have water to survive. They soon transform to the pupa stage just prior to hatching into an adult mosquito. The newly hatched adult can begin the reproducing process all over again almost as soon as emerging form the pupa form.

Search your property for any amount of standing water. This can include clogged gutters, birdbaths, wading pools, discarded tires, flowerpot trays and anything else that can accumulate small amounts of standing water. Empty the water often to prevent eggs from hatching into mosquito larvae. Another suggestion is to keep the lawn cut short and eliminate any growth of tall weeks.

Mosquitoes seem to be attracted to darker clothing. Where light colored clothing and cover your skin as much as possible. Lighter colored material and long sleeves and pants will help stop those pesky mosquitoes from biting. Mosquitoes also love nectar from flowers. Don’t use floral smelling perfume, as it will attract the mosquitoes to your body.
