What do voles look like?

vole destroying a denver lawn by tunneling

Voles, also called meadow voles and sometimes referred to as field mice or meadow mice are mammals that are active year round.  Similar in appearance to mice, these destructive lawn pests have compact, heavy bodies, small eyes, and ears that are partially hidden. They also come equipped with short tails.

Voles often dig underground burrows. In these burrows, they store food for the winter and give birth to their young. They typically reside in grasslands, preferring moister areas but are also found in wooded areas. Voles feed on grasses, weeds, shoots, tender twigs and live bark.

Are voles dangerous?

Voles are not considered dangerous to you and your family members directly, but they can spread diseases through their droppings as well as spread parasites should they infest your home. They do cause damage to lawns, fruit trees, garden plants and landscaped areas and to commercial grain crops.

Why do I have a vole problem?

Voles enter homes and businesses usually by accident. They are not great climbers and enter through openings at ground level. They are more likely to be hiding out in barns and stables. Voles tend to be more of a pest problem during the winter months when snow covering hides their destructive activity.
