Mice Ruining Your Game Day?
January 18, 2017
It could be just an ordinary Sunday and the neighbors are expected over so that everyone can watch the big game. As with any neighborhood-wide sporting event, snacks are a necessity! It’s an hour until kick-off, and it is time to make the onion dip. Can you imagine at just that moment as you are reaching into the drawer to get a spoon, you discover that tiny black pellets are sitting among all of the silverware.
This is not an unusual way to start finding evidence that rodents have made themselves at home. You might find their droppings in cabinets, under the sink, or in drawers. This probably means that they have skittered across the counters and maybe even have been snitching food from the pantry. Other evidence might be chew marks in any packaging such as bread bags, bags of flour, or cereal boxes in your kitchen or pantry. Mice and other rodents will frequently set up shop in the crawl space or attic of a home. You might find rodent feces or chew marks on storage boxes, wooden items, or plastic bins as they forage around looking for nesting material.
If rodents have moved in, what they leave behind can be very dangerous. Their droppings and the contamination they spread with their saliva on counter and in drawers can lead to sicknesses such as hantavirus, salmonella poisoning, the risk of rat bite fever, and even the plague. Rodents are also carriers of ticks and fleas who can easily spread disease to people and pets. This puts the family further at risk for those sicknesses and more, including Lyme disease.
Once you see evidence that has been left by rodents it is likely that you are only seeing a fraction of the problems that are just on the other side of the kitchen wall. Mice and other rodents will start to breed very quickly once they establish a nest for themselves. Treatments that you can buy at the hardware store will prove to be unsuccessful. You might get rid of a few; but at the rate that rodents breed, they will quickly replace the ones that are gone. Before you know it, a whole new generation of disease carrying rodents will put your family at risk all over again.
