Rat Identification
Wood rats, also known as pack rats, are common throughout Colorado
What kind or rats are these?
Wood rats, also known as pack rats, are a common rodent found in Loveland, Fort Collins and throughout Colorado. They are 6 to 9 inches in length with a tail that ranges from 5 to 9 inches long. They are a grayish tan color on their back with a light colored underbelly, which is often peppered. Wood rats have large eyes and ears and long whiskers. These rodents are nest builders. They use plant materials such as branches, twigs and sticks. They are also notorious for getting into everything from attics to car engines. They will steal “treasures”, damage your electrical wiring and make a lot of noise, which easily causes them to become a nuisance. An unusual behavior, which is where the term “pack rat” came from, is that if they find something they want, they will drop what they are currently carrying and "trade" it for the new item. They are particularly fond of shiny things. They can also be quite vocal and boisterous, creating chaos that sounds like “cats and dogs” fighting.
Are they dangerous?
Yes, rats are known carriers of many diseases that can be transmitted to people and pets. They are also extremely destructive when they chew on wood surfaces and electrical wires within your home. They can also contaminate our food supply, causing waste.
Why do I have them?
Although pack rats prefer rocky areas within coniferous forests which provide them adequate shelter, they are opportunistic and will move into your attic or walls if food, water and shelter are available.
