Avoid painful stings this summer by following a few simple tips from EnviroPest |
With the dog days of summer upon us, EnviroPest, a longtime Colorado pest control company serving Loveland, Fort Collins and the surrounding areas, would like to remind homeowners that yellow jackets, wasps, honey bees and many other stinging insects can still be a problem during backyard barbeques and lazy days by the pool. With nests fully established underground, in trees and shrubs, under overhangs and eaves and on utility poles, EnviroPest has received numerous calls from homeowners seeking help getting rid of stinging insects and although removing the nest should be left to the professionals, there are a few things homeowners can do to protect themselves and their families from painful, potentially dangerous stings.
-
Always wear shoes, especially in grassy areas
-
Overseed your lawn to make it denser, this will discourage nesting
-
Paint or stain any untreated wood to discourage nesting
-
Keep trash cans covered, away from gathering people and dispose of garbage regularly
-
Avoid putting food out until ready to be served and clean up immediately after eating
-
Avoid wearing sweet smelling perfumes or colognes
-
Replace or repair any torn or broken window and door screens
-
Do not swat at any stinging insects, this will increase the likelihood that they will become aggressive
-
Seek immediate medical attention if you do encounter stinging insects; many people can have severe allergic reactions
Finally, if you do discover a nest on your property, do not attempt to remove the nest by spraying it with a hose or knocking it down with a long object, contact a professional pest control company who specializes in the removal of yellow jackets, wasps, honey bees and other stinging insects.
