Is your trash strewn about your lawn when you wake up in the morning? Are you hearing scratching noises above your ceiling while you are trying to sleep? It could be that you have a raccoon living in your attic.   Although squirrels, chipmunks, mice, and rats are also notorious for invading attics, raccoons are perhaps the most worrying and destructive. If left too long to roam free in your house, raccoons can cause significant damage including:

  • Tearing shingles off the roof to make an entry hole.

  • Destroying insulation and ceiling tiles with urine and feces.

  • Chewing holes in walls and soffits.

Raccoons are common carriers of rabies, and their feces can carry raccoon roundworm, which can be dangerous to humans if inhaled. Raccoons can also spread distemper and mange to your pets. On top of the damage to your home and health risks, the smell from the mess they cause can be enough to drive you out of your house.

Raccoon control is a difficult problem. Once you have a raccoon living with you, it is hard to get rid of.  It is often a mother raccoon with her babies. Cold weather is setting in, and they enjoy the warmth and security of your home. The first thing you want to do is try to remove their food source.   Raccoons are nocturnal scavengers and love digging in your trash. Make sure to keep trash lids tightly secured (bungee cords are a good option), and leave them inside the garage at night if that is possible.  Bird seeds and pet foods are also excellent food sources for raccoons. Make sure these are securely put away at night. Inspect your home for damage. Raccoons can take a small hole and turn it into a large entry point. Try to avoid having tree limbs overhang your house. Raccoons are extremely agile climbers, and can easily climb a nearby tree to gain entry to your roof. Also, be wary of offers of raccoon repellent. It does not work!

If you think you may have raccoon, it is not recommended trying to remove it yourself. Raccoons are dangerous animals, and we highly recommend calling a wildlife removal professional. EnviroPest services most of Colorado, including the Denver, Fort Collins, and Boulder areas, offering animal removal services, and repair and restoration of pest related damages.
