Protect Your Family From Mosquitoes This Summer

Protect your family from mosquitoes this summer by eliminating breeding areas and changing the water in your child's kiddie pool frequently. |
Summer is here and while the fourth of July saw lots of rain, the warmer temperatures and bright sun that is typical of Colorado in the summertime will start to bring everyone out of their homes to enjoy the season. Spending time gardening, mowing the lawn and just relaxing on your patio are excellent ways to spend your summer days. Unfortunately the arrival of summer has also brought out a few unwanted critters, including the irritating mosquito. Mosquitoes are pesky nuisances that most people just put up with, using copious amounts of bug spray and expensive zappers to keep them away. Most people don’t realize that there are more effective ways to prevent mosquitoes from bothering their backyard barbecues, and at EnviroPest we have a few tips for discouraging mosquito activity as well as offer homeowners effective solutions for reducing the mosquito population in their own backyard.
If you have ever been bitten by a mosquito, you know how irritating they can be. First the little red lump appears, and then the itching begins. They are annoying and definite harbingers of summer, but they can also bring something far more dangerous than an itchy bite. They are known carriers of many serious health conditions, including West Nile virus and encephalitis. They can also cause heartworm in your pets, so it’s very important to deter mosquito activity on your property.
There are lots of ways to thwart mosquito activity. Mosquitoes need water in order to breed, so removing standing water is one way of keeping these annoying insects from coming to your barbecue. Your child’s kiddie pool and your bird bath are places that mosquitoes will breed, so it’s important to change the water frequently. Inspect your property for other items that may hold water, such as buckets and even children’s toys that are lying around. Your gutters are also a prime place for insect breeding, so it’s a good idea to keep them clear of standing water and debris. At EnviroPest we offer our Gutter Protection Program to keep your home’s gutters free from debris that might inhibit water drainage. The Leaf Defier Gutter Protection System will not only keep mosquitoes from breeding in your gutters, but has many other benefits for your home, including the inhibition of mold or algae growth, and can extend the life of your gutters. This is especially important this summer, as Denver and the rest of Colorado have experienced greater amounts of rainfall than usual, which in turn has contributed to higher mosquito activity than normal.
Mosquitoes in your yard is one annoyance, but finding mosquitoes have followed you indoors is downright maddening. The best way to keep mosquitoes out of your house is making sure all of your doors and windows have screens and that those screens are free of holes and rips. Never leave a door or window without a screen open for any length of time, as this is a blaring invitation for mosquitoes and other insects to enter your home.
At EnviroPest, we understand how annoying mosquitoes can be, and that is why we offer our Mosquito Control services for your home. If you live in Denver, Fort Collins, Durango or any other part of Colorado, we have a program that will help reduce the mosquito activity around your home. We will provide a thorough inspection of your property to locate any breeding zones, and will propose highly effective treatments to get rid of your mosquito problem. Please contact us today to find out how our Colorado mosquito control can help you keep your home and family safe from mosquitoes this summer.
