It is nearly impossible to stop stinging insects from visiting your propety, but you can make it look less desirable for them with these prevention tips from EnviroPest

Time to start digging in the garden, fire up the grill and let the windows and doors blow the warm air through the home. With the onset of the warmer months in Colorado, many tend to forget about the threat of stinging insects such as bees, wasps and yellow jackets. These guys can turn a fun outdoor adventure sour if you are not careful. Although it is hard to prevent flying insects from venturing onto your property, there are ways to prevent them from sticking around.

Prevention of stinging insects begins with a thorough inspection

You want to check around for any signs of a nest in the bushes, shrubs, siding of the home, even in crawl spaces and attics. It’s much better to look for a nest than to happen upon one while playing in the garden or preparing your lawn and landscape for the spring and summer. Now, if you do discover a nest, do not attempt to knock it down or otherwise destroy it on your own. Call in the professionals instead to have the nest removed safely.

Next, eliminate their hiding places

By cutting back the bushes and shrubs and cleaning up your landscape you will help to eliminate the chance of stinging insects finding a home on your property. Removing debris will make it more difficult for them to find a semi hidden spot to nest. Also, when it comes to the inside of your home you may want to consider a deep cleaning to remove clutter that they can hide in during the cooler months of the year. Make sure that there are no cracks, holes, or other spaces that the stinging insects could use to get inside. This includes secure screens and vent covers and sealing any exterior cracks.

Not only do stinging insects cause quite a fright but they can be dangerous as well. Most are not aggressive until they feel threatened. The stings of wasps and yellow jackets can be especially painful and some people have serious allergic reactions to their venom.
