Don't let bed bugs get past the front door this holiday season! |
Are you expecting guests over the holiday season? Like many of us in Colorado you may be welcoming home your college student or even anticipating the arrival of family members from out of town. You’re probably not planning on entertaining bed bugs though.
As the bed bug problem continues to escalate throughout the country homeowners in Denver, Aurora and across the Front Range may find themselves battling bed bugs right in their own home over the holiday. School dorms are a haven for these biting insects which may result in bed bugs coming home with your son or daughter in their bags and clothing. Likewise house guests who arrive in town via airplane or bus may inadvertently introduce bed bugs into your homes on their luggage or even on their person.
So how can you ensure a wonderful holiday season, bed bug free? Early detection is key and can start right at your front door. Here’s what you can do to minimize the risk of a bed bug problem in your home:
-
Inspect luggage closely for bed bugs
-
Keep luggage that is questionable outside until you can confirm if bed bugs are present
-
Wash any suspect clothing in the hottest temperature permitted by the fabric
Bed bugs are mainly active at night and generally congregate together in areas that are hard to access during the day. This includes in cracks and crevices of bed frames and furniture, behind electrical outlets and picture frames and even on personal items such as a computer. Because of this they often avoid detection. To catch bed bugs that have made it past your front door you should:
-
Keep an eye out for bed bug bites on yourself and your guests. Often there will be three bites that appear in a straight line. This bite pattern is often referred to as breakfast, lunch and dinner.
-
Inspect bed linens for tiny blood spots.
-
Examine bed frames and nearby furniture for dark fecal matter, shed skins and live bugs.
