The holiday visitors have gone home, and most people will spend this week taking down the Christmas tree and cleaning the house. One thing you should watch out for while doing your cleaning is bed bugs. Bed bugs have made a major resurgence in the last several years, and they are now very prevalent in Fort Collins, Greely, and throughout Northern Colorado. Bed bugs are very good hitchhikers, and if you had very many holiday visitors, they may have been introduced on luggage, presents, or even someone’s clothing. Signs that you may have a bed bug infestation include:
-
Live Bugs – This may seem obvious, but the first thing you should look for is live bugs. An adult bed bug is about the size of an apple seed. They are oval-shaped, reddish-brown in color, and very flat. Look for them in mattress seams, between mattresses and box springs, behind headboards, in furniture cushions, and even behind picture frames and outlet covers.
-
Small spots of blood – Look for small drops of blood on your pillow and sheets. These are leftover from nighttime feedings.
-
Caste skins – As bed bugs grow, their skin does not grow with them; they shed their skin when they grow too big for it. Look for these caste skins in the same areas that you look for live bugs, especially near beds.
If you do find signs of a bed bug infestation, do not try to treat it yourself. Home bed bug remedies do not work, and are often harmful to children and pets. If you need bed bug treatments in Northern Colorado, call your local pest professionals at EnviroPest. EnviroPest is a family-owned and operated pest control company that has been solving Colorado pest problems since 1965. Contact us today to find out what we can do to fix your bed bug problem.
