Are you hearing funny noises? Are you being kept up at night wondering what it is that is running around inside your walls and through your attic? Could you have a Raccoon in Your Attic? You have gone upstairs and checked, but there is not a huge mess and no signs of a raccoon. It is very possible you have a mouse or rat problem. Back in September we did a post on some Rodent Proofing Tips to perform around the house, but what if they didn’t work? How can you tell if you already have a rodent problem? Here are some major clues:
-
Droppings – Other than actually seeing the rodent, droppings are often the first clue you will get. Mouse droppings are small, black, and oval shaped. Old droppings will be dull and hard. Newer ones are shinier and soft to the touch. Rat droppings look very similar, but will be larger, up to ¾ inch in length.
-
Gnaw Marks – Rodents have continuously growing teeth and to keep them short they gnaw. They will chew anything they can get to, including electrical wires, furniture, and books, just to name a few.
-
Rub Marks – If you have a serious rat or mouse problem, you may actually notice rub marks near entry points and commonly traveled paths. This is caused by the oils in their hair rubbing the paths that they consistently use. Once again, rat runways will be larger and more noticeable than those of mice.
-
Nests – Rodent nests are typically made from newspapers, cardboard, insulation, or any other material that the pest can easily shred. Most often they are found in low traffic areas. They also like clutter, feeling more secure when there are plenty of things for them to hide behind, so look for nests in the attic, basement, or other storage areas where there are many boxes.
