Building a bat house on your property can help control mosquitoes and other insects. |
Although many fear bats, the truth is that as long as you don’t have a bat in the house or nesting in your attic, bats can be very beneficial to your property. It’s true, despite the creepiness of these winged creatures, little brown bats are helpful in keeping the insect population under control. In fact, mosquitoes are a favorite meal for many. This is great news if you are one of the many homeowners in Colorado struggling to get rid of mosquitoes this summer. So despite the usual talk of how to get rid of pests, in this blog we are going to discuss bats, the pros and cons of them and how to build a bat house.
As we mentioned above, bats have no place inside the home. If you have a bat flying around the house, we suggest contacting a Colorado bat control professional right away. See our previous post to find out why bat control and removal should be left to the pros. Now if you’ve noticed bats flying around your property, you can lure them away from your home by building a bat house.
Bat houses can be made on your own or purchased. But we think it’s a great activity for the whole family to enjoy so we have provided a link with a video and instructions on how to build your very own bat house, bat design and all.

So, while caution is advised when it comes to bats on your property, here a couple facts worth mentioning.
-
Bats eat up to 600 mosquitoes in an hour
-
Not only do bats control mosquito populations but they also feed on other pesky insects
So perhaps people and bats can coexist on one property but it is important to remember that bats are known transmitters of rabies and other serious health conditions. Though they live on an opposite schedule as us and are flying around at night while we are sleeping, they may capitalize on easy access points and roost inside. To avoid this situation, you should take steps to correct conditions around your home so that bats don’t fly in.
If you’ve noticed bats in the attic or suspect bat activity in your home, contact EnviroPest right away. Offering pest control and bat control in Fort Collins, Loveland and throughout Colorado, EnviroPest offer effective solutions to get rid of bats as well as other pests including wildlife who have tried to make your home theirs.
