Do I Have Bed Bugs?

One of the great things about living in Colorado is we don’t have many of the major pest issues you find in other parts of the country. Termite infestation in Denver is not going to be as common as, say, some place more humid like St. Louis or Chicago. Rodents such as mice and rats in Colorado will not be as much of a problem as they are in higher population areas like New York or Los Angeles. But because we have had wet springs the last few years these pests and others are growing in number. With pest activity in Colorado on the rise we are also seeing a lot of questions about another problem pest: bed bugs.
Do I have bed bugs? Are there bed bugs in Colorado? Are bed bugs for real or are they just part of a nighttime story? Do bed bugs carry disease? How do I get rid of bed bugs? These are just a few of the questions Colorado residents have about this havoc-wreaking pest.
Yes, bed bugs are for real, they do bite, and they normally bite only at night. While they don’t pose a tremendous health risk the emotional trauma they create is huge. Our sleep time is our personal rest, recovery and sanctuary time and to have a pest invade and intrude on that time is, for many people, a violation. Unfortunately bed bugs are hard for the occupant to detect and bed bugs are resistant to most store bought solutions and even some professional insecticides.
If you’re waking up with bites the next step is to determine if they are bed bugs. If you’re not able to locate one begin looking around the mattress for stains or blood spots. See if there are any small tears or holes in the mattress. Openings in the wall or floor are also possible nesting areas. Bed bugs are also ‘hitchhikers’ which means you may have brought them in from some place else. If you traveled recently they may have come back with your clothes or suitcase.
Next you’re going to want a professional, experienced pest control technician to do a thorough inspection. Many pest control companies in Colorado do not have any experience dealing with bed bugs. EnviroPest has technicians on staff that have bed bug experience from working in other parts of the country. They know what to look for, where to look, and most important, how to treat it. This is something you’ll want done right the first time.
If you think you may have bed bugs then contact EnviroPest for a complete inspection. Our inspection includes a box spring cover for your bed and one free call back if no evidence is found. If your technician does find bed bugs then your inspection cost can be rolled into our full service plan. In the Denver Metro area call (303) 530-3000. In Northern Colorado call (970) 484-0345.
