If you have heard noises in your attic, or have seen stuff chewed up and ripped, it is very likely that you have a squirrel, or some other nuisance wildlife, getting into your attic. Now that the weather is cold and it is snowing more often, wildlife and other pests are trying to get inside of homes to keep warm. Once they have established an area as their territory, they can be quite difficult to evict. Prevention is by far the best method. Follow these tips to help keep the squirrels out of your attic:
-
Check the outside of your home for entry points; screens are usually the easiest spot for them to get in at. Check all screens and repair any tears and rips. Also, check to make there are no branches hanging over your roof. Animals such as squirrels and raccoons will use these limbs to gain access to your roof, and may tear up shingles to get inside.
-
Make sure there is no food outside that may be attracting wildlife to your house. This is often what brings an animal to your house in the first place. If you feed your pet outside, make sure you pick up its food when it is done eating. Keep bird feeders as far from the house as possible. Also, make sure trash can lids are securely fastened.
-
Remove the clutter out of the attic. Squirrels love to have plenty of things to hide behind. Organizing the boxes and throwing out the junk will remove many of those hiding places, and make your attic much less appealing to the wildlife.
